Sara Prosser

An icon is an image of a person in the Holy Spirit. Although stylised, the representation can often be traced back to those painted by acquaintances of the holy person.
An icon serves as a focus for prayer. The image itself is not worshipped as an idol, as the Puritans who whitewashed or effaced the previously highly-decorated British churches believed.
An icon represents a place where Heaven interpenetrates Earth. The energy of divine light is depicted through highlights or gilding, and stylisation which suggests the transfiguring power of the Holy Spirit.

Sara Prosser lives in Broadstairs, Kent, and works in the studio of her teacher and mentor, Peter Murphy. As well as painting in the Byzantine tradition, she works in the Romanesque tradition which she sees as the indigenous iconic tradition of western Europe. She has recently completed a full figure icon of St. Cadoc for a church dedicated to him in Llangattock Lingoed, Monmouthshire.
