For many years Martin Cheek and Peter Murphy have been running mosaic and icon courses from Martin’s beautiful studio in Flint House in Broadstairs on the Kent coast in the UK. By popular demand Martin and Peter have been asked to run a combined mosaic / icon course where participants can choose to make a mosaic or paint an icon. Sicily seemed to ideal place to run this course, having fabulous classical mosaics and a rich Byzantine heritage.
It is intended that this will become an annual event. 2009 will be the second year of this course.
The course is both a creative and relaxing holiday experience. How often do you take time off just to make mosaics, paint an icon and relax?! Martin and Peter will teach for 4 hours daily. They both have twenty five years experience and they will teach you anything they know about mosaics / icons at your request. There will be at least two informal demonstrations incorporating direct and indirect mosaics as well as evening presentations covering Martin’s personal mosaic work and Peter’s iconography. There is a lot of opportunity for one to one tuition. Another great feature about this course is meeting your fellow course participants from all over the world, a unique chance to make artistic contacts and discuss art matters.
11 days, 10 nights mosaic course @ @ €1630.00 per person.

The course fee includes:
·Half Board and accommodation at Céfalu
· Transfers between Palermo airport and Céfalu.
Please note that this is dependant on catching specified flights.
· Mosaic tuition and presentations by Martin Cheek.
· Mosaic materials: 1.5 kg of Venetian Smalti and 1.5 kg of Roti mix of colours, mesh & glue.
This will be sufficient for your first mosaic, more materials may be purchased from Martin if desired.
· Icon painting tuition and presentations by Peter Murphy.
· Icon painting materials: Gessoed wooden panels, pigments, gold leaf, bole.
· 2 Full day trips to Monreale / Palermo and Piazza Armerina.
Includes transport in an air-conditioned minibus and museum fees.
· Dinner will be in a different restaurant each night.
Please note that the airfare is not included as part of the course price.
The cheapest flights from UK will be with Ryanair.com from London Stanstead to Palermo.
It is recommended that you catch the 06.10 flight arriving at 10.10.

This is an attractive price for the 2nd (and 3rd!) person in a double room to come along with the mosaic maker on holiday in Sicily as there is lots to see and do for all members of the family.
Non participating partners are welcome on all meals and tours.
The only thing they don’t do is the mosaic / icon painting workshops.
Programme
Day 1 – Thursday 8 October
17.00: Pick up from Palermo airport.
20.00: Briefing on programme and welcome drink.
Followed by dinner.
Day 2 - Friday 9 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #1.
In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 3 - Saturday 10 October
9.00. day trip to Monreale and Palermo. In the morning Peter will guide us around Monreale Cathedral and its magnificent cycle of Byzantine mosaics. Then we go to nearby Palermo where we will have lunch. After lunch we will visit the Palazzo dei Normanni where Peter will guide us around the Byzantine Mosaics. This was the seat of the Norman Kings of Sicily.
Finally we will visit La Martorana Church which has more Byzantine mosaics by the same workshop as the Palazzo..
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 4 - Sunday 11 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #2.
In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 5 - Monday 12 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #3.
In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 6 - Tuesday 13 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #4.
In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 7 - Wednesday 14 October
9.00. day trip to see Villa Romana del Casale. Peter will guide you around the superb classical mosaics of the Romano African school.
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 8 - Thursday 15 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #5. .
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 9 - Friday 16 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #6. .
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 10 - Saturday 17 October
9.00-13.00: Mosaic / Icon Workshop Day #7.
In the afternoon you can finish your mosaics and icons.
18.00: Exhibition of the produced mosaics and icons with drinks and nibbles.
Martin and Peter will evaluate the weeks work.
20.00: Dinner in Céfalu.
Day 11 - Sunday 18 October
In the afternoon we all leave for Palermo airport.
